1985 Marchesi Antinori Solaia Toscana
A deep garnet core with noticeable light brick rim. The nose exhibits moderate intensity, perhaps a little subdued at first with black cherry, a touch of truffle, cedar and leather with mint evolving with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with lovely balance and a very natural, sensuous personality. What must have been an opulent wine has certainly mellowed into a quasi Saint Emilion styled Cabernet. Smoke, a touch of capsicum and black cherries.

The 1985 Solaia continues to evolve at a quicker pace than the 1985 Sassicaia. A huge nose of olives, toast, cedar, and cassis offers considerable enjoyment. In the mouth, this dark ruby/purple-colored, opulent wine exhibits a rich, medium to full-bodied, chewy texture, decent acidity, and well-integrated flavors of smoky new oak. The finish is supple and long as the tannins have quickly melted away.

Things get much more interesting as the 1985 Solaia is poured. What a wine. Bold, luscious and full-bodied, 1985 is magnificent. More importantly, 1985 is in a perfect spot to deliver maximum drinking pleasure. Readers lucky enough to taste well-stored bottles will find a hedonistic, dramatic Solaia.

This is charged with ripe fruit flavors. Deep colors, powerful aromas and flavors of berries and mint. Full body, velvety tannins and an impressive, flavorful finish.
