1964 Vina Tondonia Gran Reserva
The 1964 Tondonia is drinking beautifully, and though it has no doubt been fully mature for decades, it clearly still has a long way to go before it will show any signs of decline. The nose is deep, complex and beautifully perfumed, offering up notes of red plums, coconut, woodsmoke, a bit of pigeon, nutmeg and earth. On the palate, the wine is medium-full, round and focused, with good depth in the mid-palate, melted tannins, and lovely acids on the long, suave finish. This is just a lovely bottle of mature Rioja. 2005-2025.

Extraordinary. Sweet vanilla and dried berry aromas and flavors have an unexpected richness in this vibrant red. Impressive for its balance of concentration and elegance; firm tannins meld with a creamy texture. The long finish defines traditional Rioja at its best.–López de Heredia vertical. 6,330 cases were made.

The red wines began with two 1964s, a vintage widely thought to be one of the great years of the 20th century in Rioja. The 1964 Vina Tondonia is cherry red in color with fragrant spice and cassis notes in the complex perfume. Sweet, savory, elegant and impeccably balanced, it is a wine of great finesse and character.
